Gas/oil mix

Postby Diverrick69 on Sat Sep 23, 2006 6:33 pm

Anyone know the correct ratio for a 1983 Suzuki 9.9 outboard? It came with the boat, but no owner's manual. I found a source for shop manuals, but really don't want to spend over $50 at this time.

50:1

Postby craig on Wed Sep 27, 2006 12:35 pm

This is just opinion, not advice to be held against me if your motor dies... :D

50:1 should be fine. My Johnson 4hp manual says to run 50:1 during break in and 100:1 afterwards. I prefer to play it safe with the oil amount and carry spare plugs and a wrench. Worst case with 50:1, you'll foul a plug or two, but that's highly unlikely if your motor is in good tune.

A friend of mine runs a marine repair business specializing in outboards. He suggests 50:1 in any two-stroke outboard.

YMMV,

Craig-
Thanks - I was kind of leaning toward 50:1, but thought I'd ask. There doesn't seem to be a Suzuki dealer near me, so can't go that route.

Rick,

My 8 hp Mariner (1984) uses a 50:1 mix. I tried to find a site for your Suzuki 9.9 but the outboard motor general sites had no references.

I got a Chilton Manual for my Mariner back in 1984. I found this link for your motor. http://www.nextag.com/CHILTON-All--zzsu ... yz5---html

This link has a Clymer Manual whick is similar to the Chilton. http://www.nextag.com/suzuki-manual/search-html.

They seem to cost around $25.00

Both companies are famous for their automotive manuals but they do manuals (sometimes better than the factory) for other motors too. I don't know if they became like Que Publishing (in the computer world), writing the manual for the OEM.

Thanks Dockmaster-
I'm familiar with both Chilton and Clymer manuals. What I realy need is an owner's manual, but probably not going to find one real soon. I'm going to call the previous owner and see if he has one. At least I can find out what mix he was running.

I wasn't sure for my Evinrude Sailmaster 8hp either, so I first used 50:1 and immediately noticed the motor pushing the excess oil out the exhaust in the form of a grey/black sludge....so I settled for a mixture of 80:1 (approximately) by using 2 ounces per gallon. Seems to run just fine on that.

I have a 1989 Suzuki 8hp on my Starwind and it is 100:1 ratio.
I would sggest finding a Suzuki dealer in your area and verify the mix with them.
Finding a Suzuki dealer is not always the easiest thing to do.
The motor has been an excellent work horse for us.
The dealer I use near me is:
Dutch Harbor Marina
Berlin Reservoir
Berlin, Ohio - east of Akron about 30 miles
330-584-4174
They are a registered Suzuki dealer/repair center.
Perhaps you can call him and get an answer.
