Starwind 19 Mainsail

Postby craig on Mon May 21, 2007 9:03 am

Hi all,

It was finally time (OK, way past time) to replace the original mainsail for my 1984 Starwind 19. I looked around and got a few quotes, but all were outside of my limited budget. The Sail Warehouse had a sail in their catalog listed for a Venture 222 (product code CM21.0S) that had the right dimensions, so I decided to give it a shot. It arrived last week and I test fit it over the weeked. It fits perfectly.

It's certainly not the best sail you can get, but it has to be considerably better than the bedsheet that I'd been using. It appears to be comparable to OEM w/regard to quality. I'll post something down the road with regard to how it performs and how it holds up, but so far I'm very pleased. It's made by Rolly Tasker (http://www.rollytasker.com/).

At $425, it's considerably cheaper than any other option I could find. I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just wanted to pass on what could hopefully be helpful information.

I think I've found a source for an inexpensive jib also, but I haven't tested one yet. I'll post when I do.

... you might consider taking a look at the jib dimensions for the Venture 222 - if it's a fractional rig and the main is a perfect match, maybe the headsail would be also. Worth a try ... McGregor made about a million Venture's, so it's good to know that the main is a good match - there should be plenty of used sails around.

Unfortunately, the Venture 222 jib has a luff of 24' so it won't work. There's nothing in The Sail Warehouse catalog that will work. As far as used Venture 222 sails, so far every one I've seen has been as bad as my old original sail... but you're right, there are tons of them out there.

A Star jib is about 5" shorter on the luff and about 6" longer in the foot. Should be close enough to work, but I haven't gotten my hands on one to test it yet (working on that). It has a sleeved luff though, which might be a bit of a hassle in bad weather. The sleeved luff zips around the forestay, so it might not be as easy to handle as a hank on jib.

Check out BaconSails.com They might have a Nineteen Main. Also check the duscussion under Starwind 223 jib for the link. Besure to measure the sail because some of the Nineteens vary depending on the supplier at the time.

I am looking to replace the main sail on my Starwind 19. Where can I find the Luff, Leech and Foot measurements for the main?

Thanks.

Mike, You need the Nineteen spec's - I 20.0' P 21.0' J 6.0' E 8' 10." They are also on the Nineteen Page http://www.starwinds.com/stw190.html. I think the P (luff) & the E (foot) are the main numbers. P being from the gooseneck to the head of the mast and E being the gooseneck to the outhaul on the boom. The leech will vary depending on how "blow out" the sail is and determine if it can be "recut.". With these numbers a sailmaker should be able to build the sail.

Here is a 5.0 oz Darcon main from Great Lakes Sail Makers ($789.). I know nothing about their work http://shop.torresen.com/ships_store/?p ... onid=10400

On the Bacon site there is discussion of measurements http://baconsails.com/site/measure. They have taken down the inventory list but you can get a quote from this page http://baconsails.activustech.com/cgi-bin/webapp.py

Don't know if this will help... S
